Role Overview

The Unemployment Insurance Auditor 3 is often the face of DWD with employers and their representatives. The auditor will verify that employers are correctly reporting wages. It will also be their responsibility to conduct a thorough search of the employer’s records for any evidence of misclassified workers. Failure to properly report wages affects the amount of collectible tax; thereby, affecting the amount of money in the Trust Fund. Experience in Accounting is preferred. 

 

Salary Statement

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $47,320.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Performing extensive research, data analysis, and investigation regarding an employer or assigned case.
  • Communicating complex legal concepts related to state and federal tax laws to an employer or its representatives.
  • Determining applicability of state and federal unemployment insurance tax laws, regulations, rules, policies, and legal precedents on assigned work.
  • Travel to the employer's location may be required depending on the job function assigned to the incumbent.
  • Documenting all investigative and determination processes.
  • Issuing subpoenas for information related to the investigation.
  • Acting as a witness in any legal challenge to investigation or determination. 
  • Issuing written findings regarding assigned work.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirement to be considered for employment:

  • Strong demonstration of adherence to organizational mission and protocols.
  • Knowledge and the ability to apply state and federal laws, the Indiana Administrative Code, the Code of Federal Regulations, IRS publications, USDOL UI Policy Letters, state policies and procedures, and legal precedent to execute job duties.
  • Knowledge of all UI program areas; understanding of the roles of other employees in the agency and how their roles affect the administration of the UI program.
  • Ability to recognize problems, issues, severe non-compliance, and potential fraud, among other assigned work.
  • Ability to recognize when program actions concern other agency functions and to communicate with those departments as needed.
  • Ability to plan, initiate, and execute program goals and initiatives adequately.
  • Ability to juggle multiple competing priorities to meet federal quality and timeliness performance standards;
  • Excellent communication, planning, organization, and time management skills.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Excellent record-keeping skills.
  • Ability to adapt to updated Information Technology system requirements and new programs affecting UI tax and compliance functions.
  • Adherence to standards of professionalism during interactions with many internal and external parties when executing job duties.
  • Ability to relate and interact with governmental employees at all levels, employers, and private citizens in a manner conducive to the professional representation of the program.
  • Ability to anticipate and evaluate problems that create barriers to achieving goals and initiate corrective actions.
  • Ability to think and react calmly in adverse or conflict-driven situations.
  • Ability to travel within Indiana, as required for job duties.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
