Introduction



The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Division of Forestry is hiring Forestry Technicians in the following locations:

Montello Ranger Station

Wisconsin Rapids Service Center

Ladysmith Service Center

Prentice Ranger Station

Boscobel - Wilson State Forest Nursery

This recruitment may also be used to fill future similar positions in these and other locations.

Some remote work will be available, after the initial onboarding period. The exact amount is based on program need. Frequent travel throughout the assigned region and occasional travel across the state will be required.

Position Summary



Forestry Technicians are responsible for fire management activities (e.g., fire suppression, pre-suppression, and prevention); serving as a certified forest fire equipment operator; operating specialized/complex forest fire control equipment including tractor/plows (bulldozers) and engines; issuing permits; implementing forest fire prevention projects; and assisting in performing fire inspections.

Forestry Technicians also assist with all aspects of the forest management program, which may include forest reconnaissance, management plans, timber sale establishment and administration, timber stand improvement, reforestation and afforestation, forest road development and maintenance, and/or property management.

Salary Information



Starting pay for this position is between $25.22/hour ($52,457.60 annually).


This position is not represented by a collective bargaining unit. Pay on appointment will follow the provisions of the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan for current employees.


This position is within the Forestry Technician Adv classification within Pay Schedule/Range 06/14.

Eligibility to work in the United States : The Department of Natural Resources does not sponsor work visas at the time of hire or anytime during employment. All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete the required Employment Eligibility Form I-9 upon hire.

Probationary Period : A 12-month probationary period may be required.

Remote Work: Based on an assessment of the goals and work activities, this position may be eligible for remote work. Approval is based on individual circumstances and is subject to supervisor approval and DNR telework policies. Approval is subject to change without notice based on business needs.

Travel: The incumbent is expected to be available to assist other teams across established boundaries as requested. The job holder travels frequently within the geographic scope of the assigned area and occasionally statewide, which may include overnight stays.

Irregular Work Hours : This position may work late evenings, nights, and weekends; dependent on fire suppression duties and department needs.

Emergency Response Time: Must be able to respond within 30 minutes to the workstation when directed for emergency response.

Driver License Requirement: The selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license throughout employment and meet the requirements of the State of Wisconsin Fleet Vehicle Policy. The candidate must be at least 18 years of age with 2 years driving experience. Candidates with three (3) or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the past two (2) years, or who have an OWI/DUE violation within the past year are not eligible to drive state vehicles.

CDL Requirement: Candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Wisconsin Class A CDL within six (6) months of employment to operate specialized heavy duty fire equipment. Candidates will be required to undergo testing for controlled substances, per U.S. DOT s382.301. Holders of CDL are subject to pre-employment and random Drug and Alcohol Testing under Federal Regulations.

Medical Screening Requirement: This position will undergo medical testing for job-related physical health conditions upon acceptance of the position and prior to effective date. Employment is contingent upon a passing test.

Drug Screening Requirement : This position will undergo testing for controlled substances upon acceptance of the position and prior to effective date. Employment is contingent upon a passing test.

Physical Fitness Requirement : Depending on the position, the duties of the position require active fire suppression and prevention duties which require frequent exposure to a high degree of danger or peril and also require a high degree of physical conditioning. These positions are key to public safety and require the incumbent to meet and maintain the specific physical fitness test standards required for these positions. For more information see here. Qualifications

Required qualifications include ALL the following criteria:

Valid Driver’s License and eligible to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License

And at least one of the following items listed:

Natural Resources experience, education, training courses, camps, internships, summer/seasonal jobs, volunteer positions, or full-time/on-going employment. Examples of this experience include:

  • Computer-based mapping system, (e.g., GIS maps or downloading GPS data)
  • Natural Resources field experience (e.g., conducting surveys, inventories, collecting data, etc.)
  • Identifying legal descriptions, and using deeds and locations within plat books
  • Training (with certificate of completion) or experience related to prescribed fire, including a demonstrated understanding of fire behavior
  • Training or experience related to any type of fire suppression, including structural, prescribed or wildland fire

Experience operating at least one of the following:

  • Tractor (at least 30 horsepower)
  • Dozer
  • Skid steer
  • Logging equipment
  • Backhoe
  • Excavator
  • Fire Engine (Types 1 through 6)

-OR-

Work experience, training, education, maintenance/operation/repair, or familiarity with auto mechanics, small engine mechanics, diesel mechanics, or industrial mechanics.

Preferred qualifications include:

An Associate’s Degree or higher in a Natural Resources-related field

Natural Resources work or internship experience in any of the following:

  • Field experience with wildland fires, prescribed burns, or structural fires
  • Forestry data collection
  • Forest regeneration assessment
  • Silviculture (i.e., science-based forest management practices)
  • Timber marking and sale establishment
  • Tree identification

Any of the following additional experiences or qualifications:

  • Wildland fire qualification at FFT1 level or higher
  • Wildland fire qualification at ICT5 level or higher
  • Prescribed fire qualification at RXB2 level or higher
  • Experience as an officer (e.g., Chief, Captain, etc.) in a structural fire department
  • Experience operating more than one type of equipment listed above in section C

Any of the following certifications and licensing:

  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (Class A)
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification
  • Completion of Operation Engineers Apprenticeship or equivalent training and certifications on heavy equipment operation
