Assistant Professor of Insect Biology

Position Overview:
The salary range for this position is $102,200 - $125,400 (annual). 'Off-scale salaries' and other components of pay, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions, qualifications, and experience.


The Department of Entomology and Nematology in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis is recruiting an Assistant Professor of Insect Biology. This is an academic year (9-month), tenure track Assistant Professor position that includes an appointment in the California Agricultural Experiment Station (AES). Faculty members who hold an Agricultural Experiment Station appointment have a responsibility to conduct research and outreach relevant to the mission of the California Agricultural Experiment Station. Participation in outreach programs and performance of university service are also expected.

The appointee is expected to establish a competitively funded research program in insect biosciences to address critical or emerging issues in any aspect of insect biology. We define insect biology in the broadest sense. Thus, the successful candidate could conduct research in many areas, including but not limited to any of the following: insect systematics; insect physiology and development; insect behavior; insect neurobiology or neuroethology; insect molecular biology and biochemistry; insect vectors of plant and animal diseases including human diseases; population and/or community ecology of insects; response of insect communities to changing climate or land use; chemical ecology of insect-plant interactions; interactions of insects with beneficial and pathogenic microbes; invasion biology of insects; insect management through host plant resistance, cultural practices, biological control, chemical control, or genetic engineering; insect sampling and diagnostics; evolution of insect resistance to control measures.

The appointee will be responsible for courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, potentially contributing to ENT10 Natural History of Insects (3 units), ENT100 General Entomology (4 units) and ENT100L (2 units), ENT101 Functional Insect Morphology (3 units), and participatory graduate seminars (e.g., ENT293N Insect Genomics and Biotechnology, ENT295N Advanced Biological Control). The appointee is expected to teach formal courses in two academic quarters each year and participate in curricular development for the Entomology and Animal Biology Majors. The appointee will mentor graduate students and contribute to undergraduate advising. Participation in and development of public outreach and/or community engagement programs, and performance of departmental and university service is expected. This position is expected to collaborate with Cooperative Extension specialists and advisors, partners in allied industries or other appropriate public stakeholders.

This recruitment is conducted at the assistant rank. The resulting hire will be at the assistant rank, regardless of the proposed appointee's qualifications.
