Job Description:
2024 Winemaking Internship
Donelan Family Wines is a small producer based in Santa Rosa making premium wines from Chardonnay and Rhone Whites to Pinot Noir, Cab and Rhone Reds with a focus on Syrah. We offer a complete harvest experience from the vineyards to the cellar and lab. Team members will have the opportunity to visit and work in some of the 13 vineyards we source from throughout the county. We will spend the majority of our time in the winery which is fully equipped to make the most of the great grapes we receive. Cellar tasks will include barrel work, sanitizing of equipment and bins, monitoring fermentation progress, pumping, punchdowns, pumpovers, fruit sorting, sample processing and anything else involved in turning grapes into wine at a premium level.
The position starts early August and can continue into November depending on the weather.
The work fluctuates with the growing season, with workdays starting at 8 hours a day at the beginning of the season and extending up to 12-plus hours as the harvest peaks. A typical schedule during harvest is 10 to 11 hours a day.
A typical workday in the cellar will involve you in all aspects of the winemaking process, perfect for a candidate eager to learn about high-end winemaking or looking to hone their developed skills in the industry. We offer a true internship with the goal of teaching and sharing knowledge and techniques of winemaking and grape growing for people who desire to continue in this field. This is a position that extends beyond the cellar, into the vineyards as well as lab work for somebody with the experience and or aptitude and desire to learn.
We work hard, we work professionally, but we like to have fun and enjoy what we are doing. There will be good music, family style lunches, wine tastings, and cold beer at the end of the day. Lunch is provided on days we receive fruit and there is always a healthy supply of snacks to keep everybody satiated. In addition to this we have an espresso machine that we keep fired up and stocked with beans to keep everyone moving through long harvest days. We like to foster an environment of camaraderie, opportunities to learn and ask questions and a launchpad for your next endeavor in the industry.
